How do I get the original window sticker (Monroney Label) for my Volkswagen?

Use the following Window Sticker Tool to reproduce an original window sticker for your Volkswagen vehicle. Your copy of the original Monroney Label Window Sticker will be 100% accurate and will provide you with the trim level, packages, and/or options your car has.

To get started, all you need is your VIN and a phone number to receive a link to your window sticker PDF file.

What you’ll need to get the window sticker

The easiest way to obtain a window sticker is with your VIN (vehicle identification number). A VIN is composed of 17 characters (numbers and capital letters). It is an identifying code, unique to your vehicle, that can be used to track manufacturer recalls, vehicle records, thefts, etc.

Where to find your VIN on your Volkswagen

The VIN for your Volkswagen can typically be found in two places:

  1. On the driver’s side door jamb

  2. The left corner of the dashboard where it meets the windshield

Other places you can find the VIN is on vehicle registration documents, insurance cards, and sometimes vehicle service invoices.

What’s the difference between a VIN decoder, Monroney Label, and Window Sticker?

A VIN decoder allows you to verify a vehicle’s history using the vehicle identification number. Decoding a VIN will provide you with the following details:

  • Model year, location of the manufacturer, and production number

  • Odometer reading

  • Number of vehicle owners over time

  • Current state or last state to title the vehicle

  • The track recalls, warranties, registration, thefts, and insurance coverage

A Monroney Label aka Window Sticker is a label or decal (most recently updated in 2013) required in the United States that is displayed on the car window of a new vehicle to disclose its equipment and pricing information, including:

  • VIN

  • Engine type

  • EPA fuel economy

  • Government safety ratings

  • Warranty information

  • Available standard options and features

  • Additional manufacturer options and pricing

  • Total vehicle price including all features

What are some key details to know about how Volkswagen describes packages and options?

Choosing the trim level (a version of a vehicle model equipped with a fixed combination of features) and selecting additional options and packages is arguably one of the most exciting steps in the car-buying process -- that is if you are familiar with the auto industry lingo. Volkswagen uses a seemingly consistent naming scheme for their trims and packages. Follow along to get briefed on your options when purchasing your vehicle from Volkswagen.

While all vehicles are not available in all trim levels, most of Volkswagen’s vehicles can be tailored to one of the five trim levels:

  1. S

  • Focuses on affordability. Comes equipped with a base model engine and basic technology and entertainment features

  1. SE

  • Comes stocked with an upgraded engine and additional driving modes (Sport, Eco, etc). It also comes standard with keyless access and push-to-start capabilities

  1. R-Line

  • Key features include a custom R-Line exterior and interior to give a more premium look and feel

  • Two-tone leather seats

  • Blacked-out interior

  • Black exterior accents

  1. SEL

  • Key features are upgrades in technology

  • Upgraded sound system

  • Larger infotainment display

  • Safety features controlled by smart sensors

  1. SEL Premium

  • Includes everything from the SEL trim and combines style and convenience to give you the best driving experience

  • Sport designed seats

  • 17-inch metallic alloy wheels

The following example uses the 2020 VW Jetta, the most affordable Volkswagen, to differentiate the different package levels.

  • S

  • 6-speed manual transmission

  • Cloth seats

  • SE

  • 8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode

  • Leather seats

  • Keyless access with push-to-start

  • R-Line

  • 6-speed manual transmission

  • R-Line badging, black interior/exterior accents and two-tone seat design

  • SEL

  • 8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode

  • Wireless phone charger

  • Lane keep assistant

  • SEL Premium

  • 8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode

  • 10-color interior customizable ambient LED lighting

  • Remote start

The larger Volkswagen vehicle models, like the Atlas and Tiguan, are available in the five trims above, as well as four additional trim levels that include a 4Motion upgrade. The additional trim levels are:

  • S with 4Motion

  • SE with 4Motion

  • SEL with 4Motion

  • SEL Premium with 4Motion

4Motion is Volkswagen’s AW (all-wheel) drive system, which is only available in SUV models.

After selecting a trim level, you can also consider additional options offered by Volkswagen to tailor your vehicle to meet your specific needs. Volkswagen offers individual options, referred to as accessories. To name a few:

  • MuddyBuddy floor liners

  • HomeLink integration

  • Various attachments to carry sporting equipment

  • Splash guards

  • Extended range remote start kit

Reference Volkswagen’s website to look at the accessories and packages for the VW Jetta.

What does the window sticker not provide?

Window stickers are most accurate when the vehicle is “new”. The sticker will not reflect any modifications installed by the dealer or owner -- nor will it detail any replacement parts.

Additionally, the sticker does not describe the vehicle’s current condition or history. To obtain such information, we recommend services such as Carfax, Autocheck, and having an inspection performed by a certified professional.

Finally, the MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) will not reflect the vehicle’s current value due to natural wear and depreciation. Although the window sticker shows that this Volkswagen had an original MSRP of $22,250 when new, the vehicle may sell for less when taking into consideration negotiations and discounts.

When does this Free Volkswagen Window Sticker Tool or VIN decoder not work?

The free Monroney label tool currently supports vehicles which are 2013 Model Year and newer. In addition to this, there are other limitations you may encounter using the sticker tool:

  • The VIN is not 17 characters long (applies to vehicles model year 1981 and older)

  • The VIN cannot be validated by certified techniques:

  • Checksum: The 9th digit of the VIN number (limited to numbers 0-9 or the letter X) of US and Canadian vehicles is used in an algorithm to determine its validity

  • Illegal character check: VINs can include any alphanumeric character minus the letters I, O, and Q

  • Your vehicle is too new and has not been updated in the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) database
